One for the boys...

I have to admit that it can sometimes feel as if most of the emphasis at a wedding is on the bride and her girlfriends and sometimes, it’s fair to say, us blokes get a little overlooked!  I thought it was about time my blog featured some of the great men I’ve photographed at weddings over the past year or so.

Whether you’re a groom having a laugh with your mates, getting prepared for the ceremony with your best man, a proud father or father in law or even a guest on the big day, you can be sure that any photos taken of you will be trying to capture as much of the spirit and emotion of the day as possible, so try and relax and enjoy yourselves!

There are a few basic tips I can give to you guys to looking good on the day if you can forgive me, so here goes…

It is the one time that you can allow yourself (budget permitting of course) to splash out on a decent suit.  I would always recommend a bespoke suit that fits you really well, especially around the back and shoulders.  It really does make a difference and given that you may be photographed from all angles by your photographer and guests throughout a very long day, it’s worth getting this right.  There are some up to date wedding fashion tips for men at http://weddingjournalonline.com/groom-fashion-trends-2015/

Now I know from experience that men are sometimes even less comfortable with being photographed than women but the secret really is to relax and have fun.  I try very hard to put all my couples at ease when I’m photographing them and try and involve them as much as possible in the process.  I think us men in particular feel more confident knowing the plan, what we have to “do” and what kind of outcome is expected.  There are certain “poses” that work particularly well, however I do firmly believe that natural and relaxed is best as I say.  The question I get asked the most at weddings is “what do I do with my hands?”  The basic rule of thumb (forgive the pun) is they should always be relaxed (never clenched in a fist!) and be placed loosely by the side, on the hips, in your pockets or both hands crossed on the chest.

As with any wedding photography, the aim is always to capture personality and relationships between people.  Hopefully these photos will showcase some of the great expressions, fashions, moments and moods of the men on these special wedding days and inspire you if you’re planning your own!

Let's hear it for the boys!
